The Norfolk Island Pine outside the Rectory in Oaks Avenue has experienced a few disasters over the years. In 2020, it lost its top in a windstorm (as well as over 200 grenade-sized immature pine cones!) just before the Christmas Carols Service.

Two days after Christmas last year, it was struck by lightning, causing damage not only to the tree but electrical appliances and circuitry in the church and rectory.
Since then, it has been gradually deteriorating. Three arborist’s reports have confirmed what we feared: the tree is dying. Even in its current state, it could be a danger to cars, buildings and people in a heavy storm.

Unfortunately, the advice we have received is that the tree must be removed.

A pair of magpies are currently raising their babies in the nest they have built there. The chicks should be leaving the nest in the next few weeks, so we have a narrow window in which to remove the tree before the magpies start again. Removal is scheduled for Wednesday, 9 October.

If you wish to say goodbye to a much-loved tree that has been part of the Oaks Avenue streetscape for several decades, you should do so soon.

Bon Voyage: We say farewell to Father Steven and Deacon Sandra as they leave

this week on Long Service Leave. Father Howard and Father Michael Deasey will be

celebrating and preaching on the Sundays they are away. Father Howard is Locum

Tenens in their absence. Please give them your full support.
